Do You Own a Pool or a Spa or Both?

  • Swimming Pool

  • Both

It has always been interesting to me, the difference between a Poolie and a Soaker.

Poolies (swimming pool owners) tend to be more family oriented and they are looking to create a 'Staycation' feel in their backyard space.

Soakers often tend to be looking to create that Zen-like moment for their busy schedules and lives. The heady days of the 80's and the Party Tubs are pretty much gone, most people understand that inviting someone to your spa is similar to inviting them to your bathtub.

But, then we have an emerging demographic that loves both their Pool and their Spa.

Still, it is interesting, in my experience, that most people who have had both, would give up their pool over their spa. This doesn't happen until a client has experienced both of course, theory often changes in practice.

Let's get some stats here about pool or spa or both. Have a great day in the meantime!

If your pool has ever been less than ready to swim in, then we have to talk. A green pool is a pool that has algae in it. Every single pool has algae. If you can see the green then you have over 250 000 algae spores for every ounce of water. WOW. A perfect looking pool has nearly 50 000 algae spores in every ounce So, we only ever control algae.

If your pool happens to get an algae bloom, then we can help you understand the chemistry involved. We can help you get it cleaned up. More importantly, the Pool Professor is ready and able to show you how to prevent it in the future, thus saving you money and time.

Whether you are a Poolie or a Soaker, this bit of information might help your understanding on how to achieve crystal clear water that not only looks good, but feels good and as important, protects your pool or spa safely.

Water that looks, feels and protects is our desired outcome. How we achieve that is through Filtration, Circulation and Chemistry, our Three Legged Stool.

A 'perfect' body of water needs all three components operating at peak efficiency to manage cost of operation. Cost of operation is the amount of money, that you, as a Poolie or Soaker, invest in a given period to operate your pool or spa.

If Filtration, Circulation and Chemistry are each responsible for contributing to 100%, then it stands to reason that if we lower the efficiency of one of those legs of our Pool Stool, then we will need to increase the other two to maintain 100%. For example, if we need to spend $7 per week to Chemically treat our spa, and we try to get away with $5 per week, we will either get poor results, or, we will have had to increase Filtration and Circulation. Further, and this is the most important part, if we do not increase Filtration and Circulation while lowering our Chemistry inputs, we will not have a body of water that is feeling good, looking good and protecting our investment.

Cleaning up a mess is far more expensive that maintaining beautiful water.

Thus, the Three Legged Stool. Each leg is as important as any other. If we remove one, we wobble and fall down eventually. The same with our pools and spas.

Not enough filtration will increase chemical and circulation needs.

Not enough circulation will increase filtration and chemical needs.

Not enough chemical input will increase filtration and circulation needs.

The question becomes a matter of economics and operating costs. More filtration means a finer filtration, which often involves an increase in cost by way of adding another layer of filtration or upgrading your current filtration system. More chemicals means, well, more chemicals to buy. More circulation means more energy consumed.

Move one leg and watch the others wobble.

For crystal clear, safe, inviting pool or spa water, we need all three legs to support us.

Without that support, our costs will go way out of sync...they will go up.

At Pool Profs, we want you to spend exactly what you need to, nothing more. We will work with you to understand your expectations for your water and determine the best methods to achieve that.

At Pool Profs we have this understanding:

We will never promote products that you do not need. We reserve the option to share information about Nice to Have products; products that either save time or get an additional quality result are Nice to Haves. The minimum requirement for your body of water is safe, inviting water that protects your pool or spa from damage. We do this with your budget in mind. We won't push chemicals, but when we recommend a chemical solution to a balance problem, you can rest assured that your pool or spa needs that chemical to maintain clear, inviting and safe water.
